If you ask me what my favorite place in Costa Brava is, there can only be one answer: Tossa de Mar. This centuries-old beach town is perfect for a weekend away from the city: from its cobblestone streets, to its charming castle with breathtaking views, to the beautiful beaches and coves in the area hidden in between the hills, you’ll be left thinking how it’s possible you didn’t know about this little spot before.

How to get to Tossa de Mar

  • By bus: the bus ride takes 1:20 hours and is ran by one company only, Moventis/Sarfa. You can check the schedule here and buy your tickets online as well by clicking here.
  • By car: 103 km away on the AP 7 highway, take the exit towards Port/Palamós, then the exit to Tossa de Mar. Click here to rent your car.

Things to see in Tossa de Mar

The Castle

Beautifully built on top of a hill overlooking the sea, it’s the only fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast and dates as far back as the 12th century. Get lost in the little cobblestone streets, painted by the colorful flowers hanging from the little houses’ balconies, while the sunset light paints the stone walls yellow and pink. Keep climbing until you reach the top, only then look down: the intense blue sea will leave you speechless.

Cala Giverola

This “cala” or cove is less than 10 minutes away from Tossa’s city center and is definitely worth a visit. To reach it, you’ll need to go up the mountains, driving your car along the edge of the cliffs. Please dare to look down: the views are so stunning you will never forget them. You will then need to go down again and reach for the beach! Amazing turquoise waters and calm, relaxing waves await you.

Passeig del Mar

Literally the “sea walk”, this is another must when you visit Tossa. Walk by the city’s biggest beach, enjoy a delicious meal in one of its fish restaurants and a refreshing gelato. Don’t forget to explore the small side streets for souvenirs and special little findings.
