On this post I’ll share with you all about one of my favorite areas in all of Barcelona, called La Dreta De L’Eixample: things to do, where to eat, and where to stay to discover this very special part of the city!

The Eixample is Barcelona’s biggest district, and the one which represents one of its most grandious moments: the golden years of modernisme. It’s the city’s prettiest, most elegant area. When I think of Barcelona, I definitely think of these spectacular buildings which take inspiration from nature and tell the story of the city’s expansion, its wealthiest families and their desire to leave their mark also through art.

What Is The “Eixample”?

So, what is the Eixample? This catalan word litearally means “expansion”, and that’s exactly what it is: an expansion of the city! Barcelona had been confined to the area between the old city walls for many centuries. In the 19th century, these walls were taken down and the government decided to carry out a plan to expand the city, the biggest act of urban planning that has ever taken place in Barcelona. The objective was to provide housing for the growing population, to improve mobility and to fight antihygienic conditions and illnesses that could spread so easily in the Old City.

In this quick guide I will be covering the area called “Dreta de l’Eixample”, that is, the right-side neighborhood of this bigger area called Eixample.

Things To Do In La Dreta de l’Eixample

Passeig de Gracia

Probably Barcelona’s most famous (and expensive) street. Passeig de Gracia is a long and elegant avenue, lined by mandarin trees, modernist buildings, and designer shops. No visit to Barcelona is complete without a stroll on Passeig de Gracia!

Passeig de Sant Joan

This is one of the city’s most popular walks! This boulevard goes from Arc de Triomf until up in Gracia, near Sagrada Familia. On its sides you will find lots of restaurants with terraces where you can eat under the sun, while admiring its beautiful modernist buildings.

Mercat de la Concepcio

The neighborhood’s market, like in most big neighborhoods of the city. Here you will find fresh produce, meat, seafood and flowers. Imagine La Boqueria, but without the thousands of visitors!

Templo Masriera

This neoclassical building appears to be a mysterious, dark place at first sight! The truth is, this was an old jewelry workshop that has now become home to a religious congregation of nuns.

Egyptian Museum

This museum is not among the city’s most popular ones, but it’s definitely worth a visit. Afer all, isn’t Eggyptian History fascinating?

Arús Library

Visiting this masonic library is like traveling back to the past. Its interior is beautiful, full of books, history and masonic symbols.

Roots & Rolls

At Roots & Rolls is a beautifully decorated and spacious restaurant serving only plant-based foods. Their specialty is their vegan sushi. I definitely love the concept of top quality, vegan food in a very trendy space!

Parking Pita

I keep going back to this Lebanese restaurant because it’s just so delicious! And I also love the intimate, dark yet beautiful atmosphere.

Satan’s Coffee Co.

Certainly a very unique name for a cafe, this place will surprise you with its top quality coffee and clean, hip design.

Luigi

This Italian restaurant is one of my Italian friends’ favorite and I can understand why! The food is delicious and the restaurant itself is elegant and modern, perfect for a foodie treat or a special dinner date.

El Palace Hotel Rooftop

I only recently visited this hotel for the first time and I was so surprised by its rooftop! It has defnitely made it to my list of all-time favorite rooftops in the city. It’s a very elegant space, with different smaller areas, such as the small flower garden overlooking the Sagrada Familia. The rooftop has a restaurant and a bar where you can enjoy a meal or cocktail in one of the city’s chicest spots.
